I don't like to call environment 'environment' when talking about things like global warming and taking care of the earth. It doesn't sound like a life-sustaining thing, like the thing we eat, drink and walk on. It sounds as an extra. An extra chocolate after dinner, a hobby, maybe like tending a garden. A source of guilt even, when we do take a plastic bag from the grocery store.
I wish I could think of a better word, or maybe invent one. 'Home' or 'source' or 'living-space' ...
